"File extension, executable program" associations enable the Windows NT 4.0 shell to launch the correct executable program when a file with the associated extension is opened from the command line, from Explorer, or from File Manager. AutoExNT Service The AutoExNT service allows you to start a batch file, AUTOEXNT.BAT, at boot time without having to log onto the computer on which it will run. CHOICE.EXE: User Input for Batch Files CHOICE prompts the user to make a choice in a batch program by displaying a prompt and pausing for the user to choose from among a set of keys. You can use this command only in batch programs. ForFiles This command-line utility can be used in a batch file to select files in a folder or tree for batch processing. LOGTIME A command-line tool that logs the start or finish of command-line programs from a batch file. This can be useful for timing and tracking batch jobs. MUNGE This utility provides a convenient way to search for and replace strings in a file or files. NOW Now displays the current date and time on STDOUT, followed by any command-line arguments you add. Scriptit ScriptIt is intended to make the building and maintaining of a simulation case relatively easy by generating the Input Parameter File and the Bezier Boundary File. For documentation please refer to scriptit.htm (included in archive). SETX This command-line utility offers a batch method for setting environmental variables in the the user or computer environment from a variety of sources, without any programming or scripting. ShowGroups This command-line utility shows the groups to which a user belongs. ShowMembers This command-line utility shows the usernames of members of a group. Sleep SLEEP causes the computer to wait for a specified amount of time. SLEEP is useful in batch files and may be more convenient to use than the at command in certain cases. TimeOut TIMEOUT.EXE is a command-line utility that causes the command processor to pause execution for the number of seconds specified by the time (#) parameter, after which it continues without requiring a user keystroke. TimeThis TimeThis times how long it takes the system to execute a given command. Wait / Waitfor WAITFOR is command-line tool waits until a signal is given across the network. Multiple machines can wait for the same signal. (wait.exe also included) Who am I This command-line utility returns the username of the user who is currently logged on. Configuration |Back to Top Applications as Services Utility With SRVANY, you can run any Windows NT application as a service. AUTOLOG Windows NT Auto Logon Setter is a simple GUI utility that configures a Windows NT Workstation to automatically log on a particular user at startup. Doing so means you can bypass the CTRL+ALT+DEL logon dialog box. C2 Configuration C2CONFIG.EXE, the Windows NT C2 Configuration Manager, can be used to compare the current security configuration on your Windows NT Workstation with C2-level security requirements of the United States government's National Computer Security Center. You can then configure the workstation to conform up to the C2 level. DNSCMD This command-line utility enables you to administer and obtain statistics from local and remote DNS servers. Graphical IPConfig Utility WNTIPCFG is a graphical version of the IPConfig utility that is shipped with the Windows NT operating system. Use this utility to manage the Internet Protocol (IP) addresses and view IP information for computers that run the TCP/IP protocol. File Access Permission per User The PERMS tool is used to display users' access permissions for a specified file or set of files. PERMCOPY This command-line utility copies share-level permissions (ACLs) from one share to another. Time Zone Editor The Windows NT Time Zone Editor can be used to create and edit time zone entries for the Date/Time icon in Control Panel UUDecode and UUEncode Utility You can use this 32-bit GUI program to encode or decode files according to the UUEncoding standard. WinAT (GUI for AT) Command Scheduler can be used to schedule commands on a local or remote computer to occur once or regularly in the future. The Workstation service must be started to use this application. DesktopTools |Back to Top Animated Cursor Editor Animated Cursor Editor enables you to create and edit animated cursors and icons in color or monochrome, including small Windows 95-style icons (16 colors, 16x16 pels). It can arrange and animate frames produced with Image Editor. Clipstor This GUI tool manages multiple Clipboard text buffers. It allows you to retrieve text from the Clipboard and store it in one of its buffers, and paste any of its buffers to the Clipboard, with your mouse. Command Prompt Here This shell extension adds a CMD Prompt Here command to the context menu of folder and drive objects which are right-clicked in Explorer. Selecting this option creates a new command-prompt session with the same path as that of the object. Default Printer (GUI) This tool shows a list of available printers and lets you simply and conveniently change your default printer. Default Printer (Command Line) This Command-Line tool helps you to simply and conveniently change your default printer. Desktops Using this desktop-switching application for the Windows NT 4.0 platform, you can customize desktop wallpaper and colors and run programs in their own separate desktops. (DeskTops was formerly knows as MultiDesk.) Image Editor Image Editor enables you to create and edit custom cursors and icons in color or monochrome, including small Windows 95-style icons (16 colors, 16x16 pels). Working with Animated Cursor Editor, Image Editor can also help create animated cursors by drawing and editing frames. Multiple Desktops TopDesk provides a powerful way to switch between and organize applications while conserving screen space. Net Connections This tool monitors and displays current net connections, taking the place of the command-line command net use. Run Extensions This shell extension adds a Run command to the context menu for files which are right-clicked in Explorer. SHORTCUT SHORTCUT is a command-line tool for creating and maintaining Windows NT and Windows 95 shortcuts. Soft Input Panel This tool allows you to use the Windows NT operating system on computers that have a pen as the only or primary input device. Windows Exit Screen Saver WINEXIT is a screen saver that logs the current user off after the specified time has elapsed. In other respects it is similar to other screen savers and can be configured and tested on the Screen Saver tab of the Display Properties dialog box in Control Panel. Disk Tools |Back to Top Break / Restore Mirror Utility BREAKFTM breaks the system mirror before the Windows NT Server 4.0 upgrade, and then recreates the mirror once the upgrade is finished. The tool has no effect on computers that do not have a system mirror. DISKMAP This command-line utility produces a detailed report on the configuration of the hard disk that you specify. It provides information from the Registry about disk characteristics and geometry, and reads and displays data about all of the partitions and logical drives defined on the disk. Disk Probe DiskProbe is a sector editor for Windows NT Workstation and Server. It allows a user with local Administrator rights to directly edit, save and copy data on the physical hard drive that is not accessible in any other way. DISKSAVE DISKSAVE allows you to save the Master Boot Record and Partition Boot Sector as binary image files. Once these critical disk structures have been saved, they can be easily restored if they become corrupted later on. DISKUSE DISKUSE is a command-line utility that scans directories on a hard disk and reports on space used by each user. Fault Tolerance (Registry) Editor FTEDIT.EXE is a new GUI utility that allows you to create, edit, and delete fault tolerance sets for disk drives and partitions of local and remote computers. Lock Floppy Disk Drives FloppyLock is a service that controls access to the floppy drives of a computer. Remote Share RMTSHARE is a command-line utility that allows you to set up or delete shares remotely. Reset System File Permissions This tool resets the NTFS file and folder permissions of system files for Windows NT Server or Windows NT Workstation to their default values. SHOWDISK This command-line utility reads and displays the Registry subkey HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\DISK. File Tools |Back to Top Directory Disk Usage DirUse shows disk space used per folder. You can use this utility to check how disk space is being used in users' home folders. Expand for Windows You can use Expand for Windows to expand one or more compressed files from the Windows NT CD. EXPNDW32.EXE is a 32-bit utility that provides a graphical interface for easy use. File Compress This command-line utility can compress one or more files. File Copy with Security File Copy with Security can be used to copy files and folders from NTFS partitions with their security intact. You can use this utility to back up files and folders from NTFS partitions without using a tape drive. FileVer This command-line tool examines the version resource structure of a file or a directory of files on either a local or remote machine and displays information on the versions of executable files such as .EXEs and .DLLs. FreeDisk This command-line utility checks for free disk space, returning a 0 If there is enough space and a 1 if there isn't. RM.EXE (Remove File) Removes Files from your Disk if 'delete' fails. Robust File Copy Utility ROBOCOPY is a 32-bit Windows command-line application that simplifies the task of maintaining an identical copy of a folder tree in multiple locations, either on the same computer or in separate network locations. Show ACLs This command-line utility enumerates access rights for files, folders, and trees. It allows masking to enumerate only specific ACLs. Text Viewer TextViewer provides a graphical interface for quickly viewing text files on local or shared drives. WINDIFF : File and Directory Comparison WINDIFF shows the differences between specified ASCII text files or folders of ASCII text files. This is particularly useful for program source code. XACLS Using this tool, you can set from the command line all file-system security options accessible in File Manager or Windows Explorer. XCACLS does this by displaying and modifying the access control lists (ACLs) of files. Management |Back to Top Add Users AddUsers for Windows NT is a 32-bit administrative tool that uses a comma-delimited file to create, write, and delete user accounts. AddUsers is most beneficial when the file is maintained in a spreadsheet, such as Microsoft Excel, that will work with comma-delimited files. Auditpol AuditPol is a command-line program that enables the user to modify the audit policy of the local computer or of any remote computer. Add Users to a Group The USRTOGRP utility adds users to a local or global group according to information in a user-specified input text file. Browser Monitor The Browser Monitor utility monitors the status of browsers on selected domains. Browsers are shown on a per-domain and per-transport basis. Browser Status Use BrowStat to find out whether a browser is running and to find active Microsoft Windows for Workgroups (WFW) browsers in Windows NT domains. This utility also provides information about the state of the browser in a workgroup, including the name of the master browser. Command Line Service Controller You can use NETSVC to remotely start, stop, and query the status of services from the command line. Compare Registry Key A Win32 character-based/command-line "Registry DIFF" that enables you to compare any two local and/or remote Registry keys in both Windows NT and Windows 95. CPU Usage by Process Quick Slice shows the percentage of total CPU usage for each process in the system. This tool is similar to PSTAT.EXE, but it presents the information in a graphical format. Dependency Walker Dependency Walker is a graphical Win32 development tool that scans any Win32 module (.EXE, .DLL, .OCX, .CPL, .SCR, and .SYS, among others) and builds a hierarchical tree diagram of all dependent modules. Domain Monitor Domain Monitor monitors the status of servers in a domain and the secure channel status to the domain controller and to domain controllers in trusted domains. Domain Monitor displays the domain controller name and a list of trusted domains, plus various status errors. (Server only) DH DH is a command-line utility for displaying information about heap usage in a user-mode process or pool usage in Kernel-mode memory. DHCP Admin Tool The command-line DHCP Administrator's Tool provides an auxiliary method of administering DHCP servers. DHCP Server Locator Utility DHCPLOC.EXE displays the DHCP servers active on the subnet. It beeps and sends out alert messages if it detects any unauthorized DHCP servers. Dump Event Log Dump Event Log is a command-line utility that dumps an event log for a local or remote system into a tab-separated text file. This utility can also be used to filter for or filter out certain event types. Enumerating Remote Access Users RasUsers lets you list all user accounts that have been granted permission to dial in to the network via Remote Access Service (RAS). Event Logging Utility This tool enables you to make entries to the Windows NT Event Log on either a local or remote computer from the command prompt or a batch file. File Access Permissions per User This command-line utility unregisters a service with the service control manager. Find Group The Find Group utility finds all direct and indirect group memberships for a specified user in a domain. This helps determine a particular user’s access to Windows NT Domain Controllers in a domain by listing the groups in which the user is a member. GetMAC GetMAC provides a quick method for obtaining the MAC (Ethernet) layer address and binding order for a computer running Windows NT Workstation or Windows NT Server (locally or across a network). GetSID GetSID compares the user security IDs (SIDs) of two accounts. GLOBAL This command-line utility displays members of global groups on remote servers or domains. Group Copy This GUI utility enables users to copy the usernames in an existing group to another group in the same or another domain or on a computer running Windows NT. (Server only) IFMEMBER IfMember is a command-line utility that checks whether the current user is a member of a specified group. It is typically used in Windows NT Workstation and Windows NT Server logon scripts and other batch files. LeakyApp This GUI testing tool appropriates system memory to see how other applications or the system as a whole runs in low-memory situations. Link Checker This 32-bit Windows tool and OLE Automation server enables you to check all the HTML documents on a Web page or site for broken links and for mistyped references to art, auxiliary files, or other pages. Link Checker runs in both GUI and command-line modes. List Loaded Drivers List Loaded Drivers displays character-based information about the installed device drivers. There are no command-line arguments. LOGOFF Utility This tool logs off a user from the command prompt. Logon and FAT File System Settings REGKEY is a GUI utility that can be used to set several Registry settings without actually editing the Registry. Local Group Display This command-line utility displays members of local groups on remote servers or domains. Near-Future Command Scheduler SOON schedules commands and programs to run in the near future on either the local or a remote computer, by generating and executing an appropriate AT command. NETDOM This utility enables administrators to manage domains from the command prompt. NETWATCH Net Watch shows which users are connected to shared folders. It also enables you to disconnect users and un-share folders. It can now simultaneously monitor multiple computers. NLMonitor This command-line utility can be used to list and test many aspects of Trust relationships. NLTEST This command-line tool helps perform administrative tasks such as forcing a user-account database into sync, getting a list of primary domain controllers (PDCs), forcing a shutdown, and querying and checking on the status of trust. NTRIGHTST With this command-line tool, you can grant or revoke any Windows NT right to or from a user or group of users. OLE/DCOM Object Viewer OLE/COM Object Viewer enables you to browse, configure, activate, and test all of the Microsoft Component Object Model (COM) classes installed on your computer. Page Fault Monitor This utility enables you to monitor the page faults that occur as you run an application. Page Fault Monitor produces a running list of hard and soft page faults generated by each function call by the application. Registry Backup Utility REGBACK is a backup batch tool that backs up the Windows NT Registry to files without use of a tape drive, providing a complete snapshot of the Registry. REGBACK allows you to back up Registry hives while the system is running and has the hive files open. Registry Change by Script This utility uses character-based batch files to add keys to the Windows NT Registry by specifying a Registry script. Registry Command Line Utility This tool enables you to add, change, delete, list, and perform other operations on Registry entries from the command prompt or a batch file. Registry Find Utility REGFIND is a command-line utility with which you can search the Windows NT Registry for arbitrary data, key names, or value names and optionally replace any of these with new values. REGFIND has a special flag for finding malformed REG_SZ strings in the Registry. Registry Restauration REGREST restores Registry hive files from backup copies by using the Win32 ReplaceKey function. Remote Command Service The Remote Command Service (RCMD.EXE) provides a secure, robust way to remotely administer and run command-line programs. RCMD consists of client and server components. The client is a command-line program, RCMD.EXE. The server end, RCMDSVC.EXE, is installed and run as a service. Remote Kill This service (RKILLSRV.EXE) with both GUI (WRKILL.EXE) and command-line (RKILL.EXE) clients allows a user to enumerate and kill processes on a remote computer. To kill a process remotely with this tool, you must be member of the Administrators group. SC This tool provides a way to communicate with Service Controller (SERVICES.EXE) from the command prompt to retrieve information about services. Scan Registry This Win32 command-line "Registry GREP" enables you to search for any string in keynames, valuenames, and/or valuedata in local or remote Registry keys in both Windows NT and Windows 95. SECADD This command-line utility enables you to add user permissions to a Registry key. SECEDIT This GUI security-context editor allows you to modify security privileges of the logged-on user and running processes, and to list the security contexts that are in use. Service Deletion Utility This command-line utility unregisters a service with the service control manager. Service Installer Service Installer is a command-line utility that installs and uninstalls executable (.EXE) services and assigns names to them. (Includes Service Installation Wizard - SRVINSTW) Service List This command-line tool can show currently running services, stopped services, or all services on a local or remote computer. Service Monitor This tool monitors services on local and remote computers for changes in state (starting or stopping). SNMP Monitor SNMP Monitor is a utility that can monitor any SNMP MIB variables across any number of SNMP nodes. SNMP Utility SNMP Browser is a utility that lets you get SNMP information from an SNMP host on your network. Shutdown GUI SHUTGUI.EXE allows you to remotely shut down or reboot a computer running Windows NT. It can be run either with command-line parameters or without. SU SU lets you start a process running as an arbitrary user. It is named after the SU (Switch Users) utility of the UNIX family of operating systems. SubInAcl With this command-line tool, administrators can obtain security information on files, Registry keys, and services, and transfer this information from user to user, from local or global group to group, and from domain to domain. Task Killing Utility KILL.EXE is a command-line utility you can use to end one or more tasks or processes. You can use TLIST to find the process names and process IDs of currently running processes. Time Synchronisation Service This service sets the system time accurately and keeps Windows NT workstations and servers synchronized with a primary or secondary timesource that you specify. Performance data Logging Service and Configuration Tool Monitor is the configuration tool for installing and controlling the Data Logging Service (DATALOG.EXE). User Profile Deletion Utility This utility deletes user profiles on computers running Windows NT.
